Borewell cost and depth around Rasipuram & Namakkal – what actually decides the bill
A borewell is the single biggest investment after the land itself, and the one most often quoted vaguely. This guide explains how rigs price a bore in our belt so you can compare quotes properly – and reduce the chance of a dry hole.
1. How the price is built
- Drilling per foot, in slabs – a base rate for the first few hundred feet, then a higher rate for each deeper slab (rock is slower). Ask for the slab table in writing.
- Casing pipe per foot – PVC or MS casing through the loose top soil until hard rock; the casing length depends on the soil and is charged separately.
- Bore diameter – 4½" is common for house / small farm use; 6½" for higher-yield farm bores with bigger motors; 7" for commercial. Bigger diameter = higher per-foot rate.
- Rig transport / minimum charge – a fixed amount even if water comes early.
- After drilling – submersible motor (HP depends on depth and yield), column pipe, cable, starter / panel, and the EB service connection (single-phase for a house, 3-phase for farms). These often equal the drilling cost.
Because two of the biggest variables – final depth and casing length – are unknown until the rig is drilling, an honest operator quotes rates, not a lump sum. Any "all-inclusive" figure quoted before seeing the land should be treated as a guess.
2. What depth to expect
The Rasipuram – Namakkal belt sits on hard-rock (gneiss / charnockite) terrain with a thin red-soil cover. Water is found in fractures, not in a continuous water table, which is why two bores 100 m apart can behave completely differently. Depths of several hundred feet are normal for farm bores, and deeper bores are not unusual where earlier ones have failed. The most reliable predictor is the depth and season-wise yield of working bores in the same survey number and its neighbours – we check this before quoting.
3. Point selection
Options range from a traditional water diviner to a geologist with a resistivity survey. The geophysical survey costs more upfront but maps fracture zones scientifically; many farmers use both. Whatever you choose, keep the point away from septic tanks and at the legally required distance from an existing neighbour's bore, and note the point's GPS position for the record.
4. Permissions
Tamil Nadu's groundwater rules require registration of new borewells with the local body / PWD ground-water wing, and rig operators must be registered. In notified over-exploited blocks permission conditions are stricter. Keep the registration receipt – banks and buyers ask for it later.
5. Questions to ask before the rig arrives
- Per-foot rate for each slab, casing rate, minimum charge – in writing
- Who decides when to stop if water is not found, and at what depth?
- Is yield tested (compressor / V-notch) and recorded before the rig leaves?
- Motor HP recommendation based on the actual depth and yield, not a fixed package
- Guarantee on motor and starter; who handles the EB application

What if the bore comes dry – do I still pay?
Yes, drilling is paid per foot regardless of result; that is why point selection and checking neighbouring bores matter so much. Some operators offer a reduced rate for a second attempt on the same land – ask beforehand.
Is a bigger diameter always better?
Only if the fracture yields enough water to justify a bigger motor. For a house or a few acres of drip irrigation a 4½" bore with the right motor is usually the economical choice.
Is there a subsidy for borewell or drip irrigation?
Drip / sprinkler systems attract subsidy under the micro-irrigation scheme through the Agriculture / Horticulture department; bore drilling itself is generally not subsidised for individuals. We point you to the right office.
